12 Best Hotels Near Guatemala City Airport + Transportation & Logistics

Most travelers skip over Guatemala City on their way to the many other popular places to visit in Guatemala. However, oftentimes, flights into Guatemala City’s International Airport (La Aurora) arrive way too late for visitors to travel onwards. For both safety and comfort, you may have to spend your first night near the airport before venturing off. So here’s our list of the best hotels near Guatemala City’s airport, plus some practical travel tips for traveling out of the airport in Guatemala City.

And if you have extra time, consider some of these fun things to do in Guatemala City.

Arriving at Guatemala City Airport

As someone who has flown in and out of many airports, Guatemala City is certainly one of the easiest to go through! Here is the order of events you will encounter once you step off the plane and make your way to a hotel.

The Airport Process After Deboarding

When you deboard the plane, you will walk through a long upper corridor filled with large pictures from around the county. This hallway contains bathrooms in case you had a long flight. Then you will walk through some metal detectors, right before you see the Currency Exchange Counter. I do not recommend trading your currency here, they give you a horrible rate, and you can find better rates at ATMs.

Then, you will be able to pick up your checked bags. Sometimes there will be a dog there sniffing bags. I always feel the urge to pet them, but let them sniff your bags, and they will move on! Once you have your bags, you will go through customs. You will get a customs form on the plane, so fill it out before you land. Usually, the officials will simply take these forms and maybe ask to scan your bag. Then you are good to go!

Transportation Out of the Airport in Guatemala City

Once you have finished customs, you will pop out right in at the exit of the airport (it is quite small!) and be greeted with lots of travel stands. But if it is late at night, no one will be in the stands.

  • Airport Taxi: If you are looking for a taxi, there is usually an official in this area or in the pickup lane outside who can help call one for you. These guys will usually be in uniforms and have some sort of badge saying they are with the airport. This means they are official and trustworthy. Taxis typically accept cash and card, but always confirm the price and payment form BEFORE you get in the cab.
  • Ubers + Wifi: If you do not like taking taxis, Uber is available in Guatemala City! They are usually cheaper and safer than taxis, and I have never had a problem using them. The biggest issue with this option is the wifi. La Aurora Airport has notoriously bad wifi once you are out of customs. If you are planning to use Uber during your stay, already having international data is a must! For instance, T-Mobile only charges me $30 for 10 days of internet, and I activate it before I fly out of the USA. Easy peasy.
  • Airport Shuttle: Finally, if your hotel has a free airport shuttle (which many on this list do), they can arrange for you to be picked up! This is usually the most convenient option to relieve stress after a long day. If you are a first-time visitor to Guatemala City and your Spanish isn’t great, this is the method I recommend. CALL your hotel to arrange this, and then call them again the day before to remind them just in case.
  • Driving: Like many major cities, Guatemala City has horrendous traffic. The road you will inevitably use once is Roosevelt. This road is packed, going east between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM and going west from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (Monday through Friday). So if you are leaving La Aurora Airport between those times, it might take longer to get to your hotel.

Is it Safe in Guatemala City?

Many locals and tourists alike consider Guatemala City to be dangerous, with the most common crime being mugging. However, as long as you take basic precautions it is not likely to happen to you. I tell visitors to be aware of their surroundings and to not walk alone at night, and you should have no issues.

Many hotels in Guatemala City have implemented additional security measures to ensure their guests’ safety. Overall, while there are security concerns in Guatemala City, taking the necessary precautions and staying in reputable accommodations can ensure a safe and enjoyable stay.

I always recommend visitors (anywhere in the world) avoid walking around alone at night and to stay in well-lit and populated areas. Don’t display your cell phone outside, and always keep valuables in a secure place. Most important: be vigilant of your surroundings! When in doubt, take taxis or transportation services provided by your hotel rather than hailing them on the street.

Remember, with common sense precautions and awareness, it is easy to have a safe and enjoyable stay in Guatemala City.

Tips for Choosing the Best Hotel in Guatemala City

You want to choose a comfortable and safe hotel in Guatemala City so that you’re well rested your first night to embark on all your Guatemala travel adventures the next morning. Here are some tips to help you choose the best hotel in Guatemala City:

Location: I recommend choosing a hotel that is in the Zona 10 area, no matter if it is for one night or five! These hotels are very close to the airport, and are only 20 minutes away, even with traffic. This will give you easy access to the city’s popular attractions, restaurants, and shops and take away the stress of extra travel time after your flight.

Amenities: Look for hotels that offer amenities you need, such as a gym, taxi service, pool, fitness center, or complimentary breakfast. Also, consider the hotel’s reputation by reading reviews from previous guests. This will give you an idea of the hotel’s service quality and whether it is worth the price.

Safety: Look at the reviews and be sure the hotels have at least 100 reviews and high ratings. Places like this are less likely to have issues or glitches that can compromise your security. This is applicable everywhere, but especially when you’re traveling in the middle of the night to a new country.
