19 Gorgeous Boutique Hotels in Antigua, Guatemala for a Lovely Vacation

The ancient capital of Antigua is Guatemala’s most popular destination. It’s perfect for travelers seeking a glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture as well as day trips to the surrounding natural wonders. And selecting the perfect boutique hotel in Antigua is the best way to ensure a comfortable start to your Guatemala vacation!

Antigua is home to some of the most luxurious and charming boutique hotels in Central America! Each with its own charm and character, from traditional Villas to Modern Elegant Designs. These boutique hotels in Antigua offer a unique touch and charm that larger chain hotels cannot match.

Getting to Antigua from Guatemala City

For those looking to visit Antigua, you will almost always land at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. It is about an hour from Antigua, and there are different transportation options to Antigua:

  • Airport Taxi: The most common and convenient option. Once you exit the airport, identify an official representative dressed in uniform and an airport badge to assist you in hailing one. That way, you can have peace of mind knowing you’re dealing with a legitimate representative, and they may also help you catch a fair price.
  • Ubers + Wifi: For those who prefer not to take taxis, Uber is available in Guatemala City and Antigua! It’s a cost-effective and secure option compared to traditional taxis. However, you will need international data because the airport’s wifi is not reliable.
  • Airport Shuttle: Another hassle-free option offered by most hotels. It’s likely going to be a bit more expensive. Just remember, prior to your trip, to call your hotel to confirm your airport shuttle arrangements. Depending on the hotel, they may forget!
  • Car Rental: If you’re feeling adventurous, driving in Guatemala promises to be quite the thrill! Especially in Antigua with its narrow, winding streets, many of which are cobblestone, it’s important to exercise caution and drive slowly. We don’t recommend this option, especially because your money goes farther here so go for the taxis instead. On top of that, finding a secure parking spot can be a hassle on weekends. If you go ahead with this option, ensure your hotel has a parking lot.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Antigua

Juan Francisco

There are several great neighborhoods in Antigua to stay in during your visit! Some place you right in the center of all the action, while others offer a more peaceful retreat. Here are the most popular neighborhoods and what you can expect!

  • Historic Center: Near the top things to do in Antigua, this is the perfect starting point for exploring Antigua’s top-rated attractions, museums, and restaurants. It’s worth noting that the area gets lively and noisy with tourists and street vendors.
  • El Carmen: Just a short distance from Antigua’s historic center, this neighborhood exudes an authentic ambiance and yet is still near tourist hotspots. Wander through the tranquil streets and admire the vibrantly hued buildings and quaint mini-markets to gain insight into the local culture.
  • San Felipe de Jesus: This tranquil oasis neighborhood is ideal if you seek fewer crowds and a more leisurely pace. It is also great for immersing yourself in the local culture.
  • La Antigua Guatemala: This upscale neighborhood is for those who prefer an elevated charm. It offers a more comfortable and refined experience with beautiful homes and gardens. Foodies will be delighted to discover its culinary scene, as it boasts some of the city’s top-rated restaurants.
  • Santa Ana: This Antigua suburb offers a peaceful rural atmosphere, alongside awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains. Please note, it is situated about 30 minutes walking from the primary points of interest in Antigua.

Getting Around Antigua

Antigua Guatemala is a secure and accessible city for walking or taking taxis and Ubers.

  • Uber: Although Uber has some legal wrinkles to iron out in Antigua, you can almost always find drivers willing to take you to your destination!
  • Taxi: If you prefer traditional taxis, simply flag them down on the street, but be sure they’re licensed and trustworthy.
  • Tuk-tuk: However, you can not visit Antigua without a ride in a vibrant tuk-tuk! These small cabs are essentially go-karts and are the typical transportation method for locals and visitors alike!
  • Walking: If you love to move your feet, you can wander down the cobblestone streets at your leisure, stopping in at any place that catches your eye!

General Antigua, Guatemala Travel Tips

Antigua, Guatemala, is a beautiful and historic city, so take plenty of time to explore its charming streets, historic sites, outdoor wonders, and restaurants. Moreover, it is conveniently located between major attractions in the country. Here are some of my general tips for staying in this charming town!

  1. Don’t forget to try the delicious local cuisine, known for its fusion of Mayan and Spanish flavors. There are some truly unique dishes that you may love, so try and seek out some ‘tipico’ dishes!
  2. Take precautions to stay safe, such as being aware of your surroundings and not carrying too much cash or valuable items with you. Antigua is a safe town, but just like anywhere else traveling recklessly or at night can pose extra dangers to be aware of.
  3. Finally, make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes and clothing, as the city is best explored on foot. Cars and tuk tuk’s are quite bumpy on the cobblestone streets, so I often think walking is easier!

Regardless if Antigua is your main destination or waypoint to other spots in the country, you will certainly enjoy your time here. The locals are vibrant and kind, and there are plenty of activities to do, you will certainly get swept up in the magic of the country!
