Using all-natural ingredients from your kitchen, give your hair a nourishing spa day with this easy-to-make hydrating mask.
After spending a month mourning and healing from the initial shock of our current shift in daily living with Covid-19, the lives that have been tragically lost, and the loss of livelihoods for so many… Slowly, as I shifted into the acceptance stage of my grief, I began doing things that nurtured my body and soul. Starting with creativity. Creativity in food, painting, skin/hair care, home decor, planting, etc. Without romanticizing this time in any way, I’ve been reflecting more deeply on many aspects of my life that were fleeting in the background during the hustle and bustle of my work and travel. From broader life questions to specifics details such as reassessing what I put into my body and on my skin. As such, this pause has permitted me with the time and space to finally experiment with food-based natural beauty from the comfort of my kitchen. One of my favorites has been this homemade DIY curly hair mask for hydration.

Why Do a Homemade Hair Mask?
After a shocking scandal revolving a popular curly hair product (which I heavily used) came to light, I decided to take a closer look at the products/ingredients I was putting on my hair/scalp.
I further wondered, now that I’m not traveling, which homemade/food-based ingredients could I try that may work for my hair? Via trial and error, I’ve learned that coconut oil wasn’t for me but that rubbing cocoa butter into my hair before bedtime did a world of wonder.
It’s been easy to experiment during these times since I rarely leave the house. So if a homemade concoction doesn’t look so great on me–it’s OK because no one is going to see it, anyway! After weeks of “laboratory experiments” — Below is the recipe I loved. Give it a try and feel free to modify it to your personal preference.
Hydrating Curly Hair Mask Ingredients
Apple Cider Vinegar | 2 tablespoons |
Honey or Manuka | 1.5 tablespoon |
Avocado | Half |
Peeled Aloe Vera Leaf | 2×3 inch piece |
Egg | 1 cracked |
Cocoa butter | 1 tablespoon (melted) |
Garlic | 1 clove |
Jamaican Castor Oil | 1 tablespoon |
Neem Oil | 1 teaspoon |
Cinnamon | 1 tablespoon |
Flaxseed | 1/4 cup |
Essential Oils (Tea tree & Mint) | 3 drops each |
These ingredients are a perfect combination for a hydrating deep conditioner to help heal/nourish dry/damaged hair. Essential oils that I love to use for fragrance: mint, lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus.
DIY Curly Hair Mask – Mixing the Ingredients
Step 1: Using 1 cup of distilled water boil the 1/4 cup of flaxseeds for 5-10 minutes until you see a foamy froth rise. Turn it off and let simmer. Add a tablespoon of cocoa butter.
While this boils…
Step 2: Mix the apple cider vinegar, avocado, egg, aloe vera, garlic, neem oil, cinnamon, manuka/honey, and essential oils in one bowl and blend. I like to use this hand blender for everything from pastries to soups to skincare concoctions!
Step 3: When the flaxseed jelly + cocoa butter has cooled, combine both mixtures and apply to your dry hair!
Fun fact: The rest of the flaxseed jelly can be used as hair gel!
Applying the Homemade Curly Hair Mask
On dry hair, apply the cream generously throughout your strands and into the scalp. Afterwards, twirl/tuck your hair into a bun at the top. Cover your head/hair using a plastic bag or shower cap. Leave this for a few hours and then wash it out. Proceed to enjoy your lusciously hydrated curly hair!
I tried it yesterday and I FELL INLOVE! My curls are SO defined and smooth! Rocking my second day hair today and I love it!
Right?! I got another one for ya! Coconut oil + apple cider vinegar + tea tree oil. Massage it around and especially into the scalp. Leave it in overnight. Works wonders for smooth hair and reducing dandruff.
